Stella Turns 2!! (on Moving Day)

Late March saw some exciting times at CasaPope.  Stella was getting ready to turn 2 YEARS OLD!!!! AND we were getting the boot from our Irvine Place house. To top it off, we also received a Pre-Birthday-Birthday Visit from Grandma & Grandpa Pope!

MOVING HOUSES
While we would have been happy at that flat for the next 2-3 years, our landlord was returning (quite unexpectedly I presume) from Houston of all places (Houston/Aberdeen transplants are incredibly common in reality).  She was generous enough, however, to give us not only a huge advanced notice, but also was willing to let us out of our lease a few months early since the Aberdeen rental market is ridiculously tight, and since the forced move out wasn't OUR doing.

Let me preface that houses in Europe and the UK, or really anywhere outside of Texas are not very big. They don't come with built-in closets as standard (let alone walk-in closets), and they have these things called "electric showers" which can be unnerving at first thought.  So when you find something that busts all the aforementioned standards, you've hit the JACKPOT!! Another difference-in Scotland primarily-is that homes are listed based on number of rooms, but not necessarily by square footage (meterage).  So you might find a listing with 4 bedrooms and 2-3 public rooms (public meaning living room, dining room, kitchen, etc), but it might be smaller than your college dorm.

So after scouring the daily, hourly, minute by minute listings,Stella and I began to grow increasingly frustrated by the market.  We viewed something like 10-11 properties in 2 weeks and would come back flat.  While we could live quite comfortably in any of them really, it was just disheartening to think we'd have to pay more for less space and fewer amenities that we had at the current house. But alas!  We finally found a GEM!  We knew we had been incredibly lucky to begin with, when we snatched up our Irvine Place property, especially at the price, but amazingly we found an upgraded property listed nearby on Devonshire Road STILL within budget as well. Still within walking distance to the city centre, James' work, our medical practice, some small grocery stores and a park to boot. So we were a bit forceful in scheduling a viewing, but we were desperate to see this place having already seen quite a few previous duds.  If this one was half as good as the listing seemed we would be sold.  Luckily, it WAS awesome and we made an offer on site!  However, there were 2 other offers that came in that same evening and we were gutted.  We were sure that our offer would not beat out the others.  Depending on the owners/listing agents, you only get one shot at an offer here in Aberdeen. A detail we didn't find out until AFTER we submitted our offer.  Had we known that, we would have offered a wee bit more since the house was slightly under our budget. Hence we felt defeated thinking we'd missed out on a great house not realizing that we wouldn't be able to increase our offer after the fact.

A day or two later, while having a nice quiet visit with Stella's Health Visitor at our neighborhood medical practice, James calls and calls uncontrollably, then finally leaves a text: "we got devonshire rd!" Again not sure what the other offers were, but the owners liked ours best somehow and we were stoked.

Unfortunately in order to make our offer most appealing we agreed to a pretty quick move-in date that coincided with family visiting and with Stella's 2nd birthday.  Not to mention we were without the help of a moving company either.  But we survived and everything went smoothly.

Again, while we enjoyed our time at Irvine Place, we LOVE LOVE LOVE our new home.  Not only did we find something with the same amount of space (which was difficult in itself), but we found one with MORE.  The neighborhood is nicer and quieter and perfectly tree-lined. We have corner coffee shops, cupcake shops, bakery, butcher, (wine shop), and a newly-opened ice cream shop!

Plus, if we stay here long enough, Stella's primary school will be just around the corner too!
So we're optimistic to see what life on Devonshire Road will bring!
(Oh did I mention the amazing master bathroom we have, complete with a separate claw-foot tub and double sinks, finally.  James and I have, oddly enough, NEVER had separate sinks.)

It's my absolute favorite room in the house!
GRANDMA & GRANDPA POPE
So when you turn 2 you get to celebrate your birthday 2 times.  (Somehow I haven't been able to negotiate this same deal for my 27th (+/- 5 years) birthday.  So to Stella I just say, "Milk it!"

Found the tutorial for this in a magazine that Grandma Jill had brought with her and it was SOOOOOO simple to make.  Plus "dog" was one of the first words Stella knew and could readily identify so it was perfect. Granted that one ear is wee bit large-woops!

This child is soooo spoiled.  She has 4 Christmases and multiple birthday parties!  Last year, I couldn't even remember MY OWN birthday!

Finally ready for a stroller & doll.  We working on her empathic and nurturing side.

Oooh! Golf clubs!!!! Her swing is actually coming along quite well now.

So for some reason, Stella was perfectly happy pushing the doll in the stroller, but if ever she came face to face with the doll (Cupcake), she would have a meltdown.

I guess those doll's eye are a bit freaky!
Stella always loves when family comes to visit.  She knows it's all about her and she puts on a show, highlighting all her tricks!

STELLA TURNS 2! (or 21 based on the melted icing on her cake)
So again, Stella's birthday coincided with our move-out date from Irvine Place, but we had managed to buy ourselves a week of overlap to help get settled into Devonshire Rd and to do all the moving ourselves.  We planned a small play-date party for her actual birthday complete with a bus cake!  Stella's favorite nursery rhyme (?) or song is the Wheels on the Bus!  I'm not sure who was more excited about the cake. Me or Stella?

Gotta admit, I was pretty proud of myself on this one.  It's not perfect by any means, but it more or less had the gist I was going for.

I, um, ran out of red M&Ms for the rear brake lights. Woops.  Keep back 500ft. This bus makes sudden stops.

2! not 21.

Excited about round 2 of Birthday #2!

LOVES her soccer ball (err football)!

Learning how to use chalk from her grown up friend Callie!

Glad someone was watching our child.  Such a good babysitter :)

NOOOOOO Don't do it!!!

Yup she really did do it.  No worries. Turns out she is the mother of dragons.  Not a peep out of her on that one.

Getting older is exhausting!

Thank you to the McGowens and Callie & Tara for helping make 2-year-old memories for Stella!

Kristi's Visit- Bump buddy for life!

So when news came that I would be getting a special whirlwind visit to Scotland from my QM Bosom Buddies-Kristi & Anne, I quite literally did a happy dance à la Charlotte York when she finds out Big's finally proposed to Carrie. Now for those who know me: I don't do a happy dance.  So THIS was a big event!  To top it off Kristi was expected to be 7-8 months pregnant at her visit, so although I was incredibly happy, I also felt a huge weight of responsibility for mum and the wee one. Disappointingly, Anne had to back out of the trip, but hopefully we can get her here some time before the end of the year. So who knew having 2 kids, a husband, and a full time high power position made it difficult to get out of the house! ;)  But to sum up, Kristi made it here and back in one piece and still as a single being (though I did have a contingency plan in place should she go into early labor).  Despite herself and her bouts of verbal diarrhea through UK Customs, she was still allowed clearance into the country.  We made a long weekend of her trip and tried to see as much as we could in the cold Scottish country.

DUNNOTTAR CASTLE :  I never get tired of this place.

So considering it was February on the North Sea, it wasn't TOO terribly cold, but it was windy. No matter, Stella still hated me and preferred to be with anyone, but me.

Either that or Stella just preferred to be with the keeper of the baby.

A shout out, or homage, to our QM 5th Floor Cashier Mrs. Smith otherwise known as Smitty!

Stella doing her best to be miserable.  Wonder who she gets that from.
Clearly not enjoying the historical markers like her Da.
DRIVE THROUGH THE HIGHLANDS:

We stopped at a foot bridge from the 1800s or thereabouts and Kristi spotted this awesome waterfall that just seemed to pop out of the roadside cliff.  Leave it to James however, to burst our bubble and break it to us that it was merely a drainage pipe.

James, genius, scoping out the "waterfall" aka drainage pipe.

Cute little bridge over the River Dee on Royal Deeside

BRAEMAR: Home of the Highland Gathering

So finally make it to Braemar only to come to a snail's pace due to makeshift parking lots (car parks) that just spawn from the literal side of the road.  So the main road connecting East to West Scotland through the Highlands comes to a crawl for a half hour or so.  Nevermind. When in Rome!  We decide to park it on the side as well and explore.

A little deceiving,  but that snow is actually knee deep at road level.

Stella clearly hates it.  She's doing her own "not impressed" look.

Not to mention, pregnant lady kept making me nervous by climbing up hills and rocks in the snow.  I couldn't even keep up with her!  Not sure what mission she was on.
Small road made smaller by the parking lot of cars that set up camp for the ski lifts.

No idea these are here any other time of the year.  They quite literally spring up once the snow packs.

Stella had a blast, despite what the pictures might portray.  I had a blast! And hopefully Kristi had a decent time at the minimum.  While I was thrilled at the opportunity to move to Scotland when it came up, I knew it was going to mean a huge sacrifice in leaving my QM family.  Having my bump buddy here even for a few days was a tremendous uplift.  But I'm gonna need more of ya to visit soon. I'll be waiting on Anne so I can reprise my happy dance.

Catching Up!

Ok so I've made myself hunker down for this one.  It's been a while since Stella and Scotland updates and with our upcoming move (will talk about that later), I figured I needed to get something out there before it's summer without a news update.

Previously on Stella's Blog...Stella was gearing up for Christmas and our first return to Houston.  Also, we were stressing out about our final VISA applications and the tedious nature of applications in general, let alone, a VISA application.

Anyway, Stella was as good as you can expect a nearly 2-yr-old to be on our long trip back to Houston.  They don't call it LONG HAUL for nothing.  14 hours in an airport and/or airplane is a ridiculous amount of time for ADULTS let alone a child.  Alas, we survived and Stella behaved like, well, Stella-good as always given the circumstances.

She had a blast visiting friends and family and especially loved celebrating 2 Christmases with lots of gifts in Scotland and lots of gifts in Texas!

Da reading her new book from Great Grandma and Grandpa.

I'm glad SOMEBODY got to watch movies!
Stella loved visiting with friends and modeling her Scottish digs.
Stella wouldn't sit with Santa so this is the best we could get :(

Learning to drive already

Being hipster cool (if those two words can be used together)

"Yup! It's all about me!"

Chillin' with the cuz

"Ya...I'm still not getting up."

Found a babysitter! At least Stella got to finish HER drink

Tired from the busy holiday social scene

Ready for school

Christmas lights at the Plazita

It's still all about Stella

It takes so long to open gifts at CASA POPE!

Stella LOVES her books!

Not sure how this happened

Wouldn't leave until she got her swing time

Luckily, everything went smoothly with our trip-whirlwind though it was-and we got our VISAs incredibly faster than we expected (thanks to some financial incentive for "RUSH" processing) an we were all able to come back to Scotland together.  Luckily for me and sadly for James.  He was really looking forward to a long haul flight back without a toddler in tow.

Our next adventure will be moving houses here in Aberdeen.  Our landlord is unexpectedly returning sooner than anticipated and so we had to find somewhere new to live, which we did, and are optimistic that it will be a good change for CASA POPE.  Hopefully, Stella can adjust fairly quickly.

Stella will return after the move!
